What Is HD Radio?
Although many people think that the "HD" in HD Radio is an abbreviated form of “high definition” radio, it is not; in fact it is actually the brand name for a specific type of transmission of the radio stations. HD radio operates with digital signals, and it is the method by which AM and FM radio stations are broadcast in the United States. HD radio has been approved by the Federal Communications Commission. As of this year, there are more than 1360 radio stations which utilize this technology, and Multicast channels are available from more than six hundred stations. Many popular manufacturers carry both car and stationary HD radio receivers, and they can be purchased nearly anywhere that you can find standard radios, online and in retail stores. The difficulty involved in attempting to produce these low-power chips accounts for the reason why HD radio receivers have not yet been made in portable models.
